A funny 5 minutes soured what was a very good performance from the digglers. On a cold night we started brightly with a new formation and a can win attitude with 2 mid-fielders in Ben. H and Weasel we bossed the middle of the park and pinned back the opposition causing them to get frustrate and wasteful.
We started brightly and created chances early with Ben. F and Neil both rattling the upright and forcing save from the keeper, Weasel also went close a couple of times. For the majority of the first half we controlled the game passing the ball brightly and creating space for each other. I was pleased with this because of the new formation I felt that the 2 midfielders worked well together and shielded the defence of Adam and Bob well as well as pushing forward in support of Ben. F and Neil.
The attacking duo of Ben. F and Neil worked well, with Ben. F being big and strong and holding up the ball for the supporting attackers looking for the easy pass and flicking the ball on when he could. Neil also played well and ran his legs off going either side of Ben. F and whipping the ball neatly across the box when at points during the game he was playing as a winger.
James came on during the first half for Neil to give him a breather and was full on running covering more of the pitch than any one else tracking back and defending with Adam when necessary. Paul came on for Weasel who still wasn’t at 100% and was having a phlegm attack! I dropped deeper than I should have because I wasn’t happy playing in the middle and so sat back with Adam. Chris came on and played on the left rampaging up and down the wing putting some wonderful passes into space for James and Ben. F to run on to.
Just before half time they got a goal after breaking down our left side and slamming the ball in the bottom nearside corner. This was no ones fault and was just a lucky break by the opposition. Who had been silenced and pinned back by the dependable and tenacious defending of Adam who is getting better week by week (did you see the pass to James from left to right?) .
After half time we swapped a few players around to rest them with Paul swapping up front with Ben. F so he could wear the opposition defence out by dragging them around. Chris went where Weasel was and Ed came on for Adam. Ed in particular played very well coming in cold after missing a couple of weeks, he stuck to his man and used his strength to muscle the attacker off the ball as well as putting the foot in to break up attacks, one of these he sent a wonderful weighted pass down the right hand side to RELEASE James. During this period of the game Weasel again had a shot and Ben. F went close again.
As the game wore on and was coming to a close we had a funny couple of minutes. There is no other way to describe it there is no reason as to why this happened 3 goals in quick succession put the game to bed. This is was a terrible end to Bob’s game when he had made some brilliant saves and kept us in it, especially the save when Bob protected little Bob and his ability to procreate!
Just before the final whistle Chris got himself into space after a brilliant pass from either James or Ben. H, (I’m sorry I didn’t see because there was a bit of a scrum before had, I have a feeling it was James). Chris found himself in the middle alone. He took his time steadied himself and then placed a beautiful shot in the bottom right hand corner which came off the upright and beat the keeper! Goal!!!
I’m not going to lie guys, I was disappointed with the result last night, not the effort of the team but the final result. It should have been a draw. We were the better side for long periods of the game and played well! We were just unlucky there is nothing more I can say we just have to pick ourselves up and get on with it again next week and keep doing what we are doing the win (or draw) will come each week we get better and better Bob, Adam, Chris and Ed put in great performances with Chris capitalising on a chance for goal and Ed showing that Adam’s position in defence may be under threat with his strength and calm distribution of the ball. Neil, Ben. F and James worked tirelessly probing harassing the opposition while Weasel and Ben. H bossed the mid-filed by tracking back and bursting forward with the attacks.
As Adam said last nigh we are not capable of using the whole width of the pitch so lets not try we need to keep it tight and make the ball do the work. This weeks defending was brilliant for the majority of the game and needs to be kept up. It’s just the final shot that lets us down the oppositions seem to hit it first time and maybe that’s what we should do, pepper the goalie.
Gents I would like to open up a debate. The teams we play don’t seem to have set positions. They have a defender and that’s it. Do you think we are too rigid and need to not have positions other than defender and goalie? I want to know so get yourselves signed in with any email account not just a Google account and let me know.
Lads you played well and we didn’t deserve to loose like we did. At least we are consistent we can score and we can defend we are a good team individually we just need to bring it all together. I know we can. Chin up guys be proud of how you played you showed a lot of balls whether I wanted to see them or not.
I think adam is right, we should play a little tighter, spreading out if we get a chance. But a defender and a goal keeper, and the rest of you having fun where ever.
But as a passing comment, thanks Paul for the write ups and the formations, without your effort we would have not improved and would still be losing 8-1.
