Bloody hell it was cold last night! Luckily we kept warm with laughter…. And a little bit of running. ‘FC Select’ are top of the league because they are quick and skilful but for the majority of the game we held our own and frustrated them. We started the first half in our usual manner a little nervous and not as quick of the mark as we should have been, they went 1-0 up. Nothing we could have done about that but afterwards we tightened and closed down and forced them back by not allowing them to play without one of our players staying tight and harassing them into making a quick (and not necessarily) the right pass.
The first half defending was top notch as per usual with Adam patrolling the penalty area making countless intercepts and crunching tackles. While Bob organised his defence with a booming voice while making a few decent saves to deny the opposition goals. His distribution of the ball was as good as always though we struggled to find space to receive it because the other team were tight with their man marking. (Anybody else notice his David James style throwing of the ball?)
The Ben duo in midfield wasn’t as tough as when Weasel is in midfield and they’re were a couple of occasions when both went forward rather than staggering themselves but that will be down to the fact they don’t usually play together this will get better the more they do. Otherwise it was another gutsy performance with Harris bringing his own brand of crunching defending and Floyd thrusting his way up the middle to link with James and Neil.
James went the right way to cementing his place in the starting line up by his tireless running both tracking back and going forward as well and having a couple of decent shots at goal. His box of tricks confused and annoyed the opposition into fouling him off the ball and sending him tumbling into a very neat commando roll. (I hope the army men crawling around the pitch took note on the correct way to roll)
Neil ‘Jellyfish’ Brown played the same way he does week in week out and was unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal, he also got stuck in with the defending and was found on the edge of his own penalty area at the end part of the game as we tried to limit the amount of goals we were down by, who says strikers won’t defend.
At half time we went in at 2-0 down which was a real shame because we had played well. There was some beautiful passing moves and real dogged defending. We seemed to be playing with more confidence this week and a lot more fun was being had.
At Half time the Subs were made Chris for Harris on the left, Ed for Adam at the back and myself to give Neil a breather, Weasel also came on and after getting over his cold was back to his best with him covering twice as much of the pitch as anyone else playing all positions from defence up (I reckon he would have had a go in goal if needed)
Chris was as industrious as usual and menaced the wing both defending and playing some lovely weighted balls to player feet. He was also strong in the tackle help cover Ed when two attackers came at us.
Ed built on his cracking game last week to be the only defender not to concede a goal while he was on. The opposition didn’t know how to handle him with his strength and power. There were a few occasions when he just muscled the attacker off the ball and calm as you like passed the ball to one of our midfielders. I know he’s worried about his fitness but he’s getting better and better with each week. For all of these reasons Ed should have got man of the match but that accolade goes to…..
Mr Referee!!! Who put up with more abuse than a normal person should? All night the ref was abused and verbally assaulted obviously in varying degrees of seriousness but he took it in fun. At the end I had a quick chat with him and he said that we were well known for being amusing and making the game fun!!!
On a serious note I would like to know if anybody would be interested in having a go at managing the team for a few weeks. I’ve got a couple of big meetings at work to do with our pay revue and could do with a few weeks off to sort that out, plus we haven’t won under me yet and maybe a new way of thinking might revitalize the squad! I am looking in the direction of messes Floyd, Harris and Brown. You will be responsible for; • Posting the line up and making sure people know when to meet. • Organising the Subs and Tactics before and during the match. • Writing up match reports for the blog as well. • Rousing the troops with an emotion packed though rarely listened to team talk • Bottom patting in general.
Let me know soon please, I would be very appreciative.
Finally a special mention should go to Tamar, Elliot and James Dad for their support. And Tamar being able to out shot the best of us.
All though the end result was 4 – 0, well done Gents same again next week lets get another few goals!!!
Next week Royal with Cheese who are just above us at 7pm so 6.30 please guys and we’ll have a kick about.
I think there was much better movement and passing...i think we played too deep at times and just need to concentrate on gettin the ball up the pitch quicker and then play our passing game in their 3rd! hats off to james...always giving 100%!!
lets not get bossed off the ball! some teams are quite dirty (i took an elbow to the mouth whilst defending the muppet in the hat) but we just gota stay physical and give as good as we get!
Think overall was a good performance last night. not overly happy with my own personal performance and felt i should i have saved 3 of the 4, so apologies about that. Major plus i think is james and weasel work so well together, both have the pace and tricks to cause problems so i think it could be an option to have them both floating behind a striker, with ben harris in the middle and adam in front of me. what does everyone think about that? switching it up with ed coming on when needed to shore things up and chris maybe tried instead of neil upfront. Ill carry on doing my david james impressions at the back, gonna try for an afro now. im always gonna look for a quick release so just make sure we have movement.
Bob man that sounds like a plan, do you fancy managing it next week? I Like the idea of Weasel and James floating if they are happy playing there. Chris to could do with adding to his goal tally.
Whats going on about the Video idea? (for those not up to speed the idea is to film the game and then analyse it to see what we can improve.
yeah ok then ill do the managing thing. ill post a lineup and tactics on monday. does anyone have a video camera and someone that is willing to video an entire game? because i think it could help loads. anyway, leave the team with me and ill get back to you on monday with it.
